PERISHER has a fantastic history, from the early pioneers developing the ski lodges to the constant evolution of skiing and the resort as we know it today.
The new Mt Perisher 6 lift is just one example of how, each year, decade, and generation, these additions add to this intriguing history.
Each June long weekend, the Perisher Historical Society holds its annual lunch at Corroboree Lodge in Perisher Valley.
This year, ski club members Alison Nowland, and Anthony Mitchell will talk about researching and recording the history of their respective ski clubs and Donald Johnston will present “Ski Club Lodge Pioneers” – the alpine initiatives of the Kosciusko State Park Trust which encouraged clubs to build their own lodges in a distinctive style which shaped the visual appearance of today’s alpine communities.
Donald has been a prolific author on topics within the Perisher Range and is currently seeking stories and photos for his next project about the design and construction of the present (second) Kosciusko Chalet at Charlotte Pass. The Chalet, built in 1939, replaced the first Chalet, which had burned to the ground in 1938. It remained clad in the distinctive pink and light grey diamond pattern until 1964. If anyone has photos or memories of the early days and would like to contribute to the project, please email Donald at info@perisherhistory.org.au.
