Bodies found in search for missing boaters on Lake Eucumbene

A second body has been located after two fishermen were reported missing in the Snowy Mountains earlier this week. 

The men, both aged 73 were fishing at Lake Eucumbene when they were reported missing.

Police, with assistance from the NSW Marine Area Command divers, NSW SES, Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter Service, Westpac helicopter, and Marine Rescue, commenced an extensive search of the waterway and nearby bushland.

Following an extensive search, a body of a man was located at Eucumbene Dam about 11am on Sunday (10 September 2023). On Thursday 7 September 2023, the body of a man was located in the same location. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Lake Eucumbene is a vast body of water, the lake having capacity to hold nine times the volume of water in Sydney Harbour. It is very popular for trout fishing but is also renowned for have many snags and obstacles such as trees below the surface. The lake is often affected by swell from winds in the alpine area, which occurred during the search on Friday where strong winds resulted in white caps on the lake.
