The weather has been brutal today, Thursday 2nd July, with punishing gale-force winds peppering the alpine and surrounding towns.
The good news is, we had snow last night, which has helped the ground cool. Only a few centimetres, but in a season that has given us nothing to write about, we will take any drop of snow.
Better news later tonight when more fresh snow arrives. Snow starts to fall tonight, with the main precipitation in NSW starting around midnight, and by 7am Friday we should see white stuff accumulating.
During Friday, it will continue to snow lightly throughout the day and into the evening, with snowfalls ceasing around 2am on Saturday morning.
Our chart is a guide to what you can see by 7am on Friday and the expected storm totals for Saturday morning.
The freezing level is initially around 1600m, then drops to lower elevations on Friday, around the 1300 to 1400m level.
The wind will remain very strong until later on Friday night, before easing on Saturday morning.
Saturday will see some sunshine, with temperatures hovering around zero, and Sunday will be cloudy but cold around minus 2 degrees.
While it will not be a huge snowstorm, it will certainly help the resorts open more terrain for the NSW school holidays starting next week.
Expect snowmaking to be firing on all cylinders from this evening. Next week, cold nights will allow for more snowmaking to help top up the cover.
All resort crews will do everything they can to cover the main trails and open key lifts.
