Miss Piggies to contest grand final against Cooma Angels

Jindabyne's Miss Piggies have secured a grand final against the Cooma Red Devils' Angels this coming weekend in Bungendore.

THE Jindabyne Rugby Union Club’s Miss Piggies will contest their first grand final this Saturday, after going through the season undefeated and recording an emphatic semi-final win last week.

The girls accounted for Easts in a resounding 62-0 whitewash, and will now take on archrivals the Cooma Red Devils' Angels in Bungendore. The game will be the first grand final showdown between the two clubs at the senior level.

The Miss Piggies will go into the grand final with plenty of confidence after scoring multiple tries and combining well as a team last weekend.

Tilhaney Grainger scored a hat trick of 5 pointers, plus continued to cause havoc each time she touched the ball. A repeat performance of gaining valuable metres from each run will be an asset this weekend.

Sarah Farrell, Rhianna Burke and Bernadette Lai each scored a double, and Eden Klemm also crossed the line.

Eden Klemm made several breaks, including a runaway try, and she will be a key attacking weapon in the grand final.

In wet conditions, the girls controlled the ball quite well, albeit with a few mistakes, and limited the opposition's chances.

Rhianna Burke was relentless in defence and executed a great tackle on one of the rare Easts breakaways down the right side.

Each girl played their role, the forwards setting up the go forward and the speedy backs finishing off the plays. Bernadette Lai, as always, proved to be elusive as she made several breaks and kept the defence guessing.

Sarah Farrell had a great running game and, besides her two tries, continually threatened as she probed the Easts’ defensive line.

Jarrah Hibberd showed good pace on the wing and at one stage looked like she would run the near length of the field to score. She would manage to unload to Klemm, and what should have been a try for Lai from the ensuing play was disallowed.

The Cooma Red Devils’ Angels will be no pushover in the grand final, even though the Miss Piggies have managed two wins against the Angels. Jindabyne beat Cooma 44-29 in late May at home, and 25-19 when they played in Cooma.

The Angels had a convincing win themselves, defeating the Uni-North Owls 54-10 in Canberra last week. The Cooma crowd will also be out in force as their men’s Red Devils team will contest the 2nd Division South Coast Monaro grand final against Bungendore.
