Thredbo Village Comes Alive for Opening Weekend

Everyone loves a good party, and the opening season celebrations at Thredbo have always been a great party atmosphere to launch another winter. And it’s not just the mountain, but the village and all the activities that will excite people this weekend.

Saturday June 10

The Village Square will be your venue to watch and see all the action with the kids the focus of attention for the early part of day. But don’t worry, the adults are well catered for with music venues and the bars offering refreshments and music.

Legendary ice sculptor Kenji is back creating his magic with the chainsaw. Watching this maestro at work is poetry in mothing as he transforms a very large block of ice into a piece of art.

From 11.30 to 3.30 the kids can have their own face artwork with the face painting crew ready to put smiles on dials. And for a treat there will be S’mores to add to the excitement. There are arts and crafts plus alpine bungee.

At 1pm meet the Olympians Velentino Guseli, Tess Coady and Jarryd Hughes at the Alpine Bar where they will be signing posters.

All weekend there are Gondola Rides, where you can ride Australia’s only alpine gondola. Secluded from the weather, the family will love this experience where you arrive at the Merritts Mountain House for brunch, lunch and afternoon drinks.

In the afternoon Thredbo kick off their massive winter après with music from 3pm at the Alpine Bar with Alice Hardwick leading proceedings before main act pop duo Kinder take the stage from 5pm to 7pm. Expect the village to be rocking.

Look back to the mountain at 6pm for the Saturday night Thredbo Fireworks. An event that everyone loves.

Thredbo’s favourite artist Mark Travers will perform at the Lounge Bar from 8pm to 11pm, or for a change of scenery see H-Cee at the Schuss Bar for 9am to late.

Sunday June 11

The Long Lunch has been sold out, as it usually does, a reminder to book earlier for next year. There will be giant games for the kids plus alpine bungee.

At 2.30 pm the Sunday sessions start at the Alpine Bar with DJ music and a chance to unwind some more in a relaxing atmosphere.

At 3pm visit the Thredbo Chapel for the blessing of the snow, a traditional event to encourage the snow gods to deliver generous portions of snow in each snowfall.

To finish your evening entertainment H-Cee play in the Lounge Bar from 5pm to 8pm.
