Hike to Kosciuszko

It’s not every day you can walk to the top of one of the Seven Summits but it’s possible to do that right here in the Snowy Mountains!

The Mt Kosciuszko Summit Hike from Thredbo Resort takes guests to the roof of Australia by foot.

The top of Mt Kosciuszko sits at 2,228 metres above sea level to earn its place in the iconic Seven Summits, which represent the highest mountains in each of the seven continents.

Thredbo Resort Outdoor Operations Manager Rachael Schultz said unlike Mt Everest this was a hike that everyone could do!

We’ve had people of all ages and abilities walk to Mt Kosciuszko from 5-year-olds to 80-year-olds. It’s something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime,” Ms Schultz said.

The Mt Kosciuszko Summit hike is listed as a grade 3 trail and is a 13-kilometre journey, which takes an estimated 4-6 hours return.

The hike starts at the top of Mt Kosciuszko Express chair lift with guests able to purchase a scenic lift pass to access the start of the trail.

The hike follows an elevated walking track to protect the fragile ecosystem and along the way meanders past glacial lakes, including the highest in Australia – Lake Cootapatamba, granite tors and seasonal wildflowers.

Thredbo Resort offers guests the option of doing a self-guided hike or – for a special tailored experience – there’s the Summit at Sunset private guided hike for groups of up to 4 people.

The private hike costs $599 for a group of up to 4 people and includes a scenic lift pass for each guest with a knowledgeable guide providing unique facts about the region throughout the journey.

The private hike also includes a hot drink at the top of the mountain, a head lamp and a 4WD lift down the mountain. At the top you’re rewarded with 360-degree views from Australia’s highest summit at sunset!
