Monopoly Snowy Mountains, the custom edition of the world’s most iconic board game, captures the heart of the Snowys, featuring towns, landmarks, and businesses from Cooma to Jindabyne, Thredbo to Perisher, and many community icons in between.
THE Monopoly Snowy Mountains game was launched today at the Banjo Paterson Inn in Jindabyne. Special guest was Mr Monopoly, who happily joined for photos as businesses who have positions on the board were presented with an enlarged version of their card.
Ivan Slavich, CEO of Service One Mutual said the organisers wanted to make sure the game made logical sense, where you start in Cooma and work your way through the area to Jindabyne and then onto the snow resorts.
"Everyone was so enthusiastic about it, everyone was saying yeah that's a great idea, lets be a part of it. Today is all about celebrating all of you who have been a part of it. We hope you like it in the look and feel and in terms of playability," said Mr Slavich.
THE BOARD GAME POSITIONS
After passing go, you encounter the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre and Community Bank Cooma in the brown positions, and land on the adjacent position LAOKO, and you will donate to their worthy cause.
Cooma properties One Agency Real Estate, Monaro Tyrepower, and Rhythm Snowsports fill the three light blue coloured positions.
When you arrive In Jail, you will be hoping you have the Snowy Mountains Magazine Get Out Of Jail Free card, courtesy of the Chance (Community Bendigo Bank Cooma) and Community Chest Cooma cards.
The three pink properties have a Jindabyne focus. The Jindabyne Dam, Banjo Paterson Inn, and Horizons Lake Jindabyne, accompanied by the Utility of Snowy Hydro.
The four stations are replaced with Cooma Monaro Railway, Snowy Mountains Airport, Snowy Mountains Helicopters, and Skitube.
Heading towards the Free Parking, the orange properties have a media theme with Snowy Mountains TV and radio stations XL FM and Snow FM.
The red section is The Station, Thredbo Leisure Centre, and Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa.
Yellow properties have a Thredbo theme including Candlelight Lodge, Talgara 3 Thredbo, and the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, with the utility of Red Energy in between.
As you round the corner and pass the Go To Jail box, the home stretch green section is snow resort areas of Charlotte Pass Snow Resort, Blue Cow, and Selwyn Snow Resort.
The most expensive properties are Thredbo Resort, which fills the Mayfair position, and Perisher Resort in the Park Lane position. And if you should land in between them, you will donate money to the Ski Patrol.
The board overview itself offers a snapshot of the Snowy Mountains, with scenic pictures, skiing, mountain biking, and a sheep farmer, all iconic to the region.
The tokens to move around the board consist of a 6-seat chairlift, a skier, a snowboarder, a gondola, a hiking boot, a mountain bike, and two animals, the wombat and a kangaroo.
A selection of Chance cards includes winning first place in the Perisher Masters race, you lose your lift pass, go back three spaces, and you forget to pay the entry fee to Kosciuszko National Park and get fined by the ranger.
BEHIND THE IDEA
The game was made possible by Service One Mutual and Community Bank Cooma, part of Bendigo Bank, in collaboration with local organisations and sponsors, and developed in partnership with Winning Moves, under license from Hasbro.
“This project is about more than just fun,” said Ivan Slavich, CEO of Service One Mutual.
“It’s a celebration of place, and a way for us to give back to the region that we’ve proudly been a part of for the last 60 years. Every game sold will support meaningful, local causes.”
Proceeds from the game will go directly to community organisations, including The Community Chest-Cooma, LAOKO Wildlife Rescue, and local ski patrols.
“The Community Chest-Cooma is proud to be part of this special edition,” said Marnie Stewart.
“We’re so grateful that funds from the game will go toward helping people in our community. I am so happy to see local favourites on the board, I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.”
