Building Tomorrow’s Champions Today

FOR almost four decades, the Snow Australia Interschools Snowsports Championships has been the heartbeat of Australia’s school-based competitive participation pathway. As it charges into its 38th season, Snow Australia’s flagship schools’ program isn’t just growing - it’s evolving, setting the stage for a new generation of snow enthusiasts.

The 2024 season confirmed what many already knew: Australia’s love for snow sports is on the rise. More than 14,500 event entries flooded Thredbo, Perisher, and Falls Creek, from bright-eyed kindy kids to savvy year 12 racers, all bringing energy, talent, and fierce school pride to the slopes. Participation surged across Regional, State, and National Championships with a 5% jump regionally, and a standout 13% increase at Nationals.

“The love and engagement Interschools brings to the snow is phenomenal,” said Rebecca Clark, Snow Australia’s Community Engagement Manager.

“More students, more schools, and more families are making snowsports a central part of their winter - and that's exactly the kind of vibrant community we aim to build.”

Across 36 event days - from the bustling hubs of Perisher and Thredbo to the high-country charms of Falls Creek and Mt Buller, students will test themselves in Alpine GS, Ski Cross, Snowboard GS, Snowboard Cross, Moguls, Cross Country and Slopestyle. Whether aiming for a personal best or simply feeling the exhilaration of racing down a course with friends, every participant is part of a bigger story: one of growth, connection, and lifelong love for the mountains.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Interschools calendar promises more events, more excitement, and even broader access. Snow Australia’s National Events Manager, Wendy Olsen, says the focus remains squarely on creating inclusive, welcoming experiences that encourage everyone to give competitive snowsports a try.

Interschools is also leading the way on accessibility. Through partnerships with Paralympics, Special Olympics Australia, and Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA), students with disabilities can compete in multiclass and mainstream events across the Championships.

For 2025, plans are underway to launch the first multiclass event at the Subaru Sydney Interschools Championships in Thredbo, reinforcing Interschools’ commitment to ensuring every student finds their place on the podium - and on the snow.

One of the highlights of the season remains the Falls Creek Schools Carnival - a week-long celebration combining competition with camaraderie. Schools from across the country gather not just for the thrill of racing but for events like the Australian Secondary Schools Snowsports Team Championships (ASSSTC) and the much-loved Amelia McGuiness Memorial Time Trials, raising vital funds for future snowsports initiatives.

As Snow Australia Interschools moves into 2025, its mission remains clear: to create pathways, open doors, and celebrate every student's snow journey, from their first tentative turns to championship triumphs.

Whether you're chasing gold or your very first race run, Interschools is ready to welcome you to the slopes. We look forward to seeing you there.
