THE Snowy Mountains will receive good snowfall over the coming days, but it’s what you call a classic Australian storm.
Rain will precede the snowfall, which is not abnormal, and even though there will be heavy rain, by Wednesday morning, we will only be looking at the snowfall accumulation, which will be heavy precipitation Tuesday night and upwards of 34cm by Wednesday morning.
Snow will continue on Wednesday during the day, although the precipitation will be lighter.
Here is a snapshot courtesy of Jane’s Weather, which is available on the Snowy Mountains Magazine website.
- Monday night – Rain starting.
- Tuesday - Rain up until lunchtime, before temperatures then start to drop and snow arrives during the afternoon. Strong winds, check your resort for lift operations.
- Wednesday morning – Jackpot, heavy snow overnight with 34cm or more by 8am.
- Wednesday - During the day, there could be an additional 12cm. The weather is still expected to be blowing hard. Again, check your resort’s lift status.
- Thursday – Wax the skis and hit the slopes as the weather improves. The snow cover will be fairly decent for June on all the open groomed trails. Still cautious in the off-piste though, as the base is not exceptionally deep (yet).
The Snowy Hydro Spencers Creek snow depth is currently 48.8cm (see below) which is a great improvement from this time last year.
The June skiing has been good so far, and with added snowmaking from the resorts, there is good terrain options open at present. After this new snow, the resorts will be working hard to open more.
